2026 Symposium on Spatiotemporal Data Science August

Financially Aware Infrastructure Systems

Extending spatiotemporal data science into “financially aware infrastructure systems”—where data flows seamlessly from sensors → models → contracts → capital markets.

Digital Twins as the structure, XBRL playbook, buildingSMART openBIM and GAO report as the Digital Foundation, NASA’s Moon Base International Software System Interoperability Standard (ISwSIS) as the Vision, and AI‑Empowered Digital Ecosystems as the Enabler for Resource Utilization

Panel: Infrastructure Financial Data (IFD) Working Group

Chaowei Phil Yang, NSF Digital Twin Research, Innovation & Collaboration Hub (DT-RICH)

K. Dixon Wright, SRC Digital Insurance Services

Calvin Kam, Strategic Building Innovation (SBI)  / buildingSMART

David Blaszkowsky, EDM Association

Financial Data in Infrastructure

While BIM handles physical and operational data, infrastructure also depends on:

  • Capital investment
  • Payments and cash flows
  • Risk and insurance
  • Lifecycle funding

Infrastructure finance itself combines:

  • Public funding and private capital
  • Debt, equity, and revenue streams tied to usage and performance

Infrastructure = spatiotemporal system + financial system

  • Digital twins of infrastructure (physical + temporal)
  • Digital twins of finance (contracts + payments)

Together, they create a full-stack “digital infrastructure system”:

Layer - Function

Spatiotemporal data - Where/when things happen

Operational analytics -  How systems perform

Financial data (XBRL/FDX) - How projects are funded and paid

Digital Ecosystem - How data is shared, standardized, and automated

VC Pitch

Part of the educational opportunity of the Startup AI Seed Contracts is for the students to pitch to VC’s and potential clients the platform they have created to secure “Application for Payment” (AFP) data from DOT PDF’s and provide that “data as a service” to stakeholders, including sureties and surety brokers.
